How to take care of your mental health

  1. Take care of your body

Regular exercise can have a major impact on your mental health and can help relieve stress. Your brain releases endorphins during exercise, reducing stress and improving your mood. It will also help you get a better night sleep and improve your energy levels. Go for a walk in the evenings, sign up for a Club Vitae class or an evening swim to create this healthy habit in your life.

As well as exercising, fuelling our body with the right foods is also important for our mental health. Making healthier food choices will improve your energy levels, mood and your overall mental health. Make sure to start with a healthy breakfast to set yourself up for the day. You could prepare healthy meals the day before so you have healthy options when you don’t feel like cooking.

  1. You are what you consume

This saying does not only apply to food but also to all the digital content you consume throughout the day. We are all guilty of spending too much time online and it can have a negative effect on our mental health.

Reducing the type and amount of content you consume can lead to increased focus in other areas, better sleep and more time to do the things you love. How often do you complain about not going to that yoga class or going for a walk with that friend because you have no time? Try a small digital detox and get off Instagram and Netflix and you will find you do have the time!

  1. Surround yourself with good people

Make plans with friends of family that you know support you and listen to you. Avoid people that are negative and may bring your mood down. Join a club or take up a new hobby to meet likeminded people. It is important to surround yourself with people who will help you grow and have a positive outlook on life. Also, remember you can be that person for your friends and family too. So, arrange to go for a walk and grab a coffee with that supportive person for a digital detox this week!
